Frequently Asked Questions

Visitors to the church, particularly tourists, often have questions relating to the rich history of the surrounding area including its links with Robert Burns, Robert the Bruce and Oswald, King of Northumbria. Below, we have tried to provide answers to some of the most common questions that are asked.

Is there a book that provides a good introduction to the history of Kirkoswald and the surrounding area of South Carrick?

Yes, a former minister of the parish, the Rev. James A. Guthrie, has written a book entitled 'A Corner of Carrick' that tells the story of the area. Copies are available at a cost of £4.00 plus postage and packing. Please contact the church if you wish to order a copy.

I'm researching my family's history in the local area. Where should I start my genealogy search?

People new to searching for family records in Scotland should make the 'Scotland's People' web site their first 'port of call'. This is the official government resource of genealogical information for Scotland and is an excellent resource for finding records of births, marriages and deaths.  Census information is also available on the site.
